The Stunning Exterior Paint Reveal At Our Lake House

We've made a lot of changes to our little Connecticut lake house since we bought it in October 2021, but the exterior paint may have had the most dramatic impact on the overall vibe of the house. Read on for the stunning before and after!

Our contractor described the original color of the house as “sh*t brown.” Definitely NOT the vibe I was going for. The house has some fun mid-century elements and as soon as we saw it I had a vision of how great it would look painted black or blue black. You can read about the the whole process start-to-finish and see some samples from our home exterior moodboard here.

What Exterior Paint Colors Did We Choose?

After much deliberation, we landed on Benjamin Moore Soot for the exterior of our lake house, including all trim and deck. (Note: I was initially a tad worried that the deck would get hot underfoot and considered going with a light grey for the deck floor, but that hasn’t been a problem at all).

Although I wanted to go with a beautiful rich wood stain for the front door, I just couldn’t justify the expense of buying a new door when our existing door is perfectly fine at the moment. So after experimenting with a few lighter color options (which I hated), we went with Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black for the front door.

Swoon. I really am so happy with this color combo, especially against the seasonal elements of our yard (vibrant greens and pinks, and of course snow in the winter months).

Sidenote: do not underestimate the power of replacing light fixtures. I hated the little rinky dinky exterior light from the moment we bought the house (and it also gave off virtually no light). We replaced it with this vintage-style barn light in copper from Cocoweb and it really stepped things up.
